Mein Schiff RELAX - My experience on board

Why Mein Schiff RELAX can offer more than just sea views

I admit it: when I boarded Mein Schiff RELAX, I was curious – but also slightly sceptical. A large ship, lots of people, and then it's supposed to be ‘relaxing’? Spoiler alert: it works. Between good food, a great deal of comfort, genuine relaxation in the spa, and evenings that ended quite differently than planned (keyword: silent party), I tested the ship thoroughly for myself. I've summarised my impressions in five points – direct, personal, and without sugarcoating.

The Mein Schiff RELAX is not a ship for those who want ‘higher, faster, louder’. It is for everyone who wants to eat well, relax seriously in between – and still suddenly end up on the dance floor with headphones on in the evening.

1. Comfort

I'll start with what is most underestimated in everyday life: space. Despite it being ‘busy’ on the RELAX, I never felt like I was in the way anywhere. And yes: the balcony is not just a decorative detail – it's a little private therapy session with a sea view.

What I found practical: water dispensers on the decks (by the lifts), you can simply refill your bottle and don't have to constantly stock up on water. Cabin service twice a day also felt a bit like ‘good morning’ and ‘sleep well’ – only more professional.

2. Spa

If I had to choose one area that really makes the ship ‘RELAX’, it would be the spa area. Lots of light, tranquillity, saunas with that ‘I could live here’ atmosphere.

And then my personal highlight: the cold chamber. First, a short cold phase (1 minute at -26°C) and then really cold (3 minutes at -106°C). Afterwards you feel as awake as after three espressos, only without the shivering. This cold chamber is one of the wellness innovations especially highlighted on the ship.

3. Food

This is where I officially admit: I didn't ‘eat’. I explored. The Harbour Market is exactly that pleasant ‘I'll take whatever I feel like’ concept – fresh, lots of choice, and it doesn't feel like a canteen, but more like a food hall vibe at sea.

Added to this is the feeling that the premium all-inclusive package on the RELAX really contributes to the travel experience (less stress, more enjoyment). And for those who really want to pamper themselves: the restaurant Fugu by Tim Raue is the culinary spectacle upgrade.

4. Entertainment

At first, I thought: "Silent Party? So... put on your headphones and dance... isn't that embarrassing? Spoiler alert: I was there from 10 p.m. to 2 a.m. Without a break.

Three channels, three DJs, you can change the music style as you please – and best of all: you see people going totally wild... and it doesn't match the song you're listening to at all. It's so absurd that it's brilliant.

5. Atmosphere

For me, the RELAX has a clear atmosphere: European, relaxed, pleasure-oriented. You quickly feel at home on board, a bit ‘like at home’ and almost forget that you are travelling between exciting islands.

And then there are places that you remember because they are simply special – like the Captain's Bar at the very front (with that ‘I feel like I'm sitting on the bridge’ moment).

Important for families: childcare is included (by age group) – but if you're expecting a huge water park, you should know that the water play area is more ‘small but nice’ than ‘Aqua Disney’.

My personal conclusion:

For me, Mein Schiff RELAX is not a ‘loud spectacle’ ship, but a ‘you can relax and still have lots of fun’ ship. And if you ask me what you should definitely do: try the silent party. Just go for it – the rest will take care of itself. 😉
