Why you absolutely must visit Oman

Oman truly amazed me with its many facets. This sultanate on the Arabian Peninsula is a place to immerse yourself in, to marvel at, and to pause and reflect. Here are my personal highlights and recommendations.

Jebel Akhdar – The green jewel of the Hajar Mountains

Spectacular views, fresh mountain air (always around 15°C) and a serenity that touches the soul: Jebel Akhdar, the “Green Mountain,” left a lasting impression on me. I highly recommend a short hike through the three traditional villages (Al Aqr, Al Ayn, and Ash Shirayjah) – past centuries-old terraced fields, fragrant rose gardens, and the fascinating Falaj irrigation channels that have been watering these lands for generations. This is Oman at its purest.

Another highlight: the climate on Jebel Akhdar is significantly cooler than in Muscat – a refreshing escape, especially during the hot months.

Wadi Bani Awf – Adventure on the off-road trail

If you’re travelling with a driver-guide, don’t miss the off-road route through Wadi Bani Awf. This spectacular journey in a 4x4, winding through steep gorges, hairpin bends and past abandoned villages, was a truly unforgettable experience for me – absolutely breathtaking and unique!

One of the most unforgettable experiences for me was waking up very early in the desert to climb a dune before sunrise. That moment when the sun slowly rises over the sea of sand is worth every bit of effort – pure magic in golden light and silence.

Oman Across Ages: the must-see museum

Just outside Nizwa, the “Oman Across Ages Museum” opened its doors in March 2023. Architecturally, the museum is already a highlight in itself (well worth a visit for the design alone) and its content impresses with an engaging, interactive exhibition on Oman’s history and cultural diversity. A modern museum experience that both inspires and informs.

Practical Tips and Useful Information for Your Trip to Oman

To ensure a smooth and enjoyable journey, here are some essential details about planning and getting around:

Safety at the Highest Level

Oman is considered one of the safest travel destinations in the world – it even ranks 2nd on the Global Peace Index. It’s also an excellent choice for solo female travellers. The Omani people are open, respectful, and always ready to help.

Ideal for Self-Driving

We travelled with a driver-guide, but for those who prefer to explore on their own, renting a car in Oman is very easy. The roads are in excellent condition, signs are bilingual (Arabic and English), and most routes are straightforward – although some sections do require a 4WD vehicle.

Minimal Time Difference

The time difference is small: only +3 hours in winter and +2 hours in summer. No jet lag to worry about!

English Widely Spoken

Whether in hotels, at petrol stations or in the souk, English is spoken almost everywhere, making communication easy and stress-free.

Exceptionally Clean and Well Maintained

What stands out in particular: streets, hotels and public places are remarkably clean. The country places great emphasis on order and hospitality – and you can feel it at every moment.
