When nature becomes a work of art

One of the most stunning cave systems in the Dominican Republic is the Cueva de las Maravillas near La Romana. This multi-chambered geological wonder features aquamarine-colored rivers and lakes glowing between illuminated rock formations and hundreds of ancient petroglyphs.

Located between San Pedro de Macorís and La Romana, just a stone’s throw from the beaches of the southern coast, the “Cave of Wonders” is one of the country’s most accessible caves – and a must-see for culture lovers. It’s home not only to dramatic rock shapes and massive stalactites and stalagmites, but also to more than 500 well-preserved cave paintings and rock carvings left by the Taíno people – believed to date back over 2,000 years.
